Lancaster Landmark Hotel Company Limited

The Lancaster Landmark Hotel Company Limited specialises in the luxury sector of the hotel market. The company owns and operates three prestigious London hotels, including the Landmark London, the Lancaster London, as well as the K West Hotel & Spa. The group prides itself in offering outstanding facilities and a high level of service. In fact, The Lancaster London was voted Best UK Hotel (meeting category) for four years in succession.

The Challenge

To promote its environmental ethos of ‘walking softly on the planet’, the group wanted to achieve zero waste to landfill by 2013 and to reduce its carbon emissions.

The Solution

Veolia worked in partnership with all three properties to help them achieve their objectives, creating ‘green teams’ to implement new recycling initiatives.

Waste audits identified five main recycling opportunities; food, glass, card, mixed recycling and general waste. Labelled, colour-coded containers were installed in designated areas outside each hotel, whilst the Lancaster London and Landmark London were also given their own baling equipment for cardboard.

Veolia was keen to support the group at every opportunity during the transition to 100% waste diversion from landfill. A dedicated Account Manager delivered in-depth and on-going training to all staff. Housekeeping teams took part in a specialist programme and were provided with mixed recycling and general waste bags to reduce contamination and increase recycling opportunities.

The Account Manager also arranged for the ‘green teams’ to visit Veolia’s £60 million Integrated Waste Management Facility in Southwark, South London. Here they were shown how their recycling was treated and learnt about the new technology involved in turning waste into a resource.

To support the change, Veolia developed site-specific recycling awareness and guidance information to ensure the initiative would work. This included informative posters and labels to ensure clarity and consistency when employees disposed of waste items. What’s more, hanging signage was created for the external bin storage area at the Lancaster London, where glass, paper, plastic, cardboard and food are now meticulously separated and recycled.

The Result

Although 2012 was a particularly challenging year for the group owing to the Jubilee, the Royal Wedding and the Olympic games, Veolia still maintained service levels in excess of 99%.

Recycling levels have soared from 30% to over 80% following the implementation of Veolia’s approach.

Costs savings of over £1,000 a month

The group has also been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard after reducing its carbon emissions by 2.4% across its three London properties.

Recycling levels have soared from 30% to over 80% following the implementation of Veolia’s segregated waste stream approach. To date, the group has made costs savings of over £1,000 a month, despite rising operational and treatment costs. All residual waste collections now go to the Energy Recovery Facility at Southwark, creating a landfill free environment for the group of hotels.

In recognition of its environmental achievements, the Lancaster London recently won a Gold Star award, Green Hotel of the Year and the Procurement Director won Green Champion of the Year. At the same time the hotel gave Veolia the accolade of Large Supplier of the Year in recognition of our contribution to helping them realise their environmental goals. The group has also been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard after reducing its carbon emissions by 2.4% across its three London properties.
